Yes, the only reason you should be distinguishing the versions is to avoid
the old ones, which were designed for previewing, not converting files.

Yes, it was an odd choice, but they apparently wanted to minimize awareness
of the change, and just let the old preview-only profiles die of natural
causes. As I recall, we caught this before PS 6 shipped as a final product,
so it was only the dear, departed PressReady, and a version of Illustrator
that shipped containing the v1 profiles.
You can set ColorThink to display profiles based on the internal or the
external names as desired.
