There really isn't a choice on whether you print on a coated or uncoated paper
on many of the current inkjet printers. Running straight Somerset Velvet looks
terrible on a Roland, Epson, or HP. The coating is essential to holding detail
and any kind of image quality. I suppose that if you don't mind a "softer"
look, you can actually run an uncoated paper, however I have yet to find one
that actually prints nearly as well as one engineered for the inkjets. This is
the one large advantage of the IRIS, but it is extremely debatable as to how
long the prints can really last because of the nature of dye inks themselves.
The new Epson 7600/9600 with a capable RIP can outprint an IRIS 3047 with
little trouble these days. I like the Legion papers but they have had issues
in the past with coating consistancy, more of a quality control problem than
anything but they remain a very popular paper and have a very fine feel to
them. Short of the accelerated testing already performed there is no real way
to quantify the breakdown of a coating over time ( who know if there will be a
problem in 10 years from now, but currently it doesn't look to be a problem).
The display conditions count for so much of the durability of the final print
that these tests are too controlled to make blanket statements about the
archival nature of an ink and media combo.
