Send the lab a copy of the PhotoDisc Test image. This will isolate your on
screen corrections from their output. If that precorrected print is dark, its
them, if it prints fine, but is too light on your screen, its you. Since
Photoshop corrects for your monitor's gamma, that should not be an issue, and
if you can relate paper white on screen to that under your proofing lights, t
hen you should be in the ballpark there as well.

I have worked with both, side by side, and the Apple Studio is easily the
match of the Formac, and offers a wider range of brightness control as well.
No reason to move sideways, or even downhill; that won't fix your problems.
