This isn't true. We don't get color management for free on OS X. It's
not just a matter of setting up ColorSync, which is largely ignored by
most applications except for the selected CMM (of which I'm only aware
of one at the moment, the Apple CMM). Applications must still be
specifically written to do things like honor embedded ICC profiles and
then use display compensation, which iPhoto doesn't do.
