This funny named 'named' card profile is not an Alias of your chosen
monitor profile. It appears to be either a manufacturer PROM or EPROM
upload from the monitor to the OS or an OS generation of the video
card itself. I think I'll plug another monitor in later this week and
check the gamma and kelvin and colorants against my current monitor
to determine this.
Further I will refer to this funny 'named card profile as Stupid.icc
for want of a better name:
For OSX.x getting around the 'display' issues:
1. Boot from OS9 (gets you around Admin privileges issues)
2. Put an Alias for your OS9 SystemFolder>ColorsyncProfilesFolder
into OSX System>Library>Colorsync>Profiles Folder
2a. If you prefer: move all your profiles (except generic RGB, CMYK, Gray, Lab)
to OS9 SystemFolder>ColorsyncProfilesFolder. (Keeps everything in one place)
3. Open OSX Library>Colorsync>Profiles Folder and trash Stupid.icc
4. Open OSX Users>'username'>Library>Colorsync>Profiles and place
Alias to your OS9 SystemFolder>ColorsyncProfilesFolder
4a. If you prefer: move all your profiles to OS9
SystemFolder>ColorsyncProfilesFolder. (Keeps everything in one place)
5. Open OS9 SystemFolder>ColorsyncProfilesFolder>Display Folder and trash Alias
6. Empty Trash.
6. Open OS9 Monitor Control Panel>Color and choose your Monitor
Profile. Immediately open StartUp Control Panel: choose OSX and
reboot.
7. Open OSX Display Control Panel: choose same monitor profile as OS9.
8. Open OSX and OS9 Colorsync Control Panels and choose same monitor
profile where applicable (and possible).
9. Trash OS9 SystemFolder>ColorsyncProfilesFolder>Display Folder and
trash Display Alias
10. Open OSX Library>Colorsync>Profiles Folder and trash Stupid.icc
11. Restart. (or re-Login if you choose)
When I re-calibrate I simply make sure I name and replace the new
exactly as the old.
This is the only way I've been able to keep the funny named profile
on my system (OSX.1.5) from ignoring the video card reset.
As for getting mad: I still can't fathom the thinking it takes for
various software and OS writers to create as many custom locations
for ICC profiles as they can. I dump every profile, and I mean every
profile, into the OS9 ColorsyncProfilesFolder and manage them with
Colorthink. Add to that this 'card' profile gizmo flippin' issue and
you've got a wonderful teaching tool for new users on what 'not' to
look for as feature driven software. OSX has the power to be easier
than this.
