Anomaly between Photoshop 7.0.1 and 6.0.1

We've been working with a client on their in-house color management, by
profiling their digital cameras. We've developed a custom "ColorChecker"
using their fabric swatches as the target. Everything was working fine with
only minor edits to the profile until Photoshop 7 came alone. Upon opening a
file in PS 7.0.1 and applying the camera profile we noticed a severe
lightening of the shadow end of the image. Almost a ghosting effect of about
75% reduction. Opening the same file in PS 6.0.1 doesn't product this
effect. We've tossed the ColorSync prefs, rebuilt new monitor profiles with
different tools, tried BPC off and on, but the results are still the same.
Backing up to a known quantity, we measured our MacBeth ColorChecker DC
(CCDC) using a Spectrolino/Spectroscan, took a shot with the digital camera
and made a profile with all 240 patches of the CCDC using ProfileMaker Pro
4.1. We then edited the data to remove the gray bars around the edge and the
far right column that has the glossy patches. This left us with 170 patches.
We generated another profile (cropping the CCDC accordingly).
If you open the image in both PS 6.0.1 and 7.0.1 and preserve the imbedded
custom profile we created for this customer, the Photoshop 7 image is flat
and lacks shadow contrast. Almost like it was ghosted back. If you assign
the above CCDC profiles to the images (one in each version of PS) the 170
patch profile has the same effect (the images look different in each version
of PS), but the 240 patch profile makes both images look the same.
Unfortunately they look flatter in the way PS 7.0.1 was displaying using the
other profiles. Meaning the more punchy Photoshop 6 image now looks like the
lackluster Photoshop 7 image.
The 170 patch and 240 patch profiles use the exact same target image. All I
did was edit the data and crop the target image for the respective data in
ProfileMaker 4.1. I also used "Large" and "Paper Gray Axis".
Frustrated, I created a new target image from another digital camera and got
the same results. This customer has been using the profile we created using
the customized "ColorChecker" for some time with absolutely no problems
until PS 7.
Any ideas or thoughts on this? I'm stumped. Is this a bug in PS 7 or a bug
in PS 6 that was fixed in PS 7. That would be a bummer, because we would
have to go in and fix their custom profile to increase the shadow
saturation. I have the profiles and a sample file if anyone would like to
take this offline for further discussion. Thanks!
