DuWayne hit the nail on the head. The bottom line is output quality, and
if ImagePrint gives me the color and output quality, how they do it in their
code is virtually irrelevant to me (or other end users). To make it clear, if
you have an Epson 9600 Ultrachrome, the driver (with the ink recipe) is built
for that inkset. If you were to run Gen4 inks in a 1270 or 1280, you would
need to contact Colorbyte and have these things done at a cost over and above
the purchase price. With the advent of the Ultrachrome inks and the
flexibility they provide, the third party inkset market is even less appealing
than before. I suppose customers would have to generate a certain amount of
interest in order for Colorbyte to see the economic sense of building
additional drivers. The sheer fact that their profiler has been using spectral
data ( for a while) to generate the profiles shows that they have been
thinking out of the box, I don't suppose that building them from LAB data
would make them better just because everyone else is doing it that way (except
PMP4.1 as DuWayne already said).
