Nikon 8000 scanner calibration

Hi,

Other than time saved are there any advantages to getting my Nikon 8000
calibrated? I scan MF transparencies of my own work for eventual output to
my Epson 10KArc via PS6. I usually scan to 14 bit (becomes 16 in PS).
Normally I make whatever changes to color, contrast, brightness, W&B points
with the Nikon software prescan in just a few minutes per scan - no big
deal, works fine. Do these prescan changes in curves and histogram degrade
the scan in anyway? I assume with calibration I would need to make far
fewer moves prescan? But given the price of software and target, I would
prefer to save the money for now unless there is some advantage other than
time saved in prescan mode. Also, if I do decide to calibrate my scanner,
what would be a good recommendation for software and target? Many thanks!

Tom Andrews
