RIPs have many masters to serve especially on this list, so while the Best and Colorbyte rip have been discussed, as you point out there are others.
If you are Mac oriented the two that come to my mind are the Colorbyte and the Perfect Proof. Of those two rips they both seem to have their place in a business. Generally the Colorbyte is used in a photographic area, a museum, or print for pay,but it could be used in a prepress area. I see the Perfect Proof in more of a prepress enviironment, but could easily be used for photography, a museum, or print for pay. From my experience both of these RIPs are relativley easy to setup and use.
As for other rips than run on windoze, they are too numerous to mention them all (even if I had a complete list). But other ones I often hear about and sometime see are ones like the ColorBurst and Wasatch. I am sure others on this list use them everyday.
The Best, Colorbyte, Prefect Proof,ColorBurst, Power RIP and Wasatch will all work nad is some cases equally, but a lot of it depends on what your business is and and your needs to rasterize images and pages.
