Roger,
Right now the easiest way to connect the DTP41 is via a Keyspan adapter, either the USA-28X (two 8 pin round ports Mac only) or the USA19QW (one 9pin PC style, cross platform). I've tested lots of other adapters and some work with some packages and some don't, for the most part the Keyspans just *work* and I willingly pay a minor premium for that.
However (twist my arm!) we showed a "sneak preview" of the DTP41 series II at Seybold (which will formally be released at Photokina). This unit features X-Rite's exclusive multi-protocol port connection technology. Simply by switching a cable the instrument will connect serially or via USB. This will require software packages to be revved so they are aware of the potential to connect via USB on the DTP41 - a feature previewed at the Monaco booth with Profiler running under OSX (coming soon!). The instrument is now charcoal in color (like the DTP92USB) and as part of the new cabling scheme, all power is also delivered through the communications cable.
For full disclosure, I also demoed a new version of ToolCrib at the ColorSync Users Group in San Francisco this week. This is a Mac OSX (Jaguar) and Windows only release which adds lots of features folks have been asking for... Strip definitions for the DTP41, X-Key functionality for OSX for any instrument (even non X-Rite!), Digital Swatchbook data capture... This should be on our website for free download by the end of the month.
Developers can contact me off list for our new SDK for OSX and Windows.

Use the DTP41 connected to a Keyspan Twin Serial adapter. No need for
an extra cable. AFAIK, I don't think that there is such thing as a
"USB" cable for the DTP41? It would be nice. Ray Cheydleur?
