I once heard (from kodak) that the perfect room color was Munsel N8.
I've never really researched that.
Having been involved in several construction projects for color
separation departments in prepress I've just chosen a light gray paint.
I don't recommend making the room lighting too dim. This will make the
monitors too luminant and it can throw off your perception of contrast.
You can buy bulbs that are 5000K from a local electrical supplier.
Make sure to tell them you want 5000K. I made the mistake once of saying
"daylight" bulbs. The salesperson told me they're not the same.
Oddly enough I measured the color temperature after all this work and
found it not to be what I wanted. Best I could get was about 4500K. I
measured some of our customers viewing and was shocked to see what I saw
:) Nobody had a perfect 5000K. It was all over the place.
I just finished a large catalog of matching garment colors and the
customer kept insisting on looking at the proofs outside the viewing
booth because they wanted to see it more like a person would view it in
a living room.
I have this description of what a metamerism is mounted inside the
booth. It's like it's not there. Nobody ever reads it or remembers it
when I point it out.
As I enter my third decade of making, selling and viewing color proofs
I've decided it's more about psychology than technology.
