Henrik,
As always, very illuminating.
I would agree with engaging, rather than disengaging, an OS-level CMS. I am
tired of explaining to people why the color is true to output in apps like
InDesign or Photoshop (and, to some degree, Quark with the right tools) but
not from Microsoft Word (NOTE: I didn't bother to upgrade to Office X, but I
would imagine that since it uses Quartz, and thus ColorSync, that it's
display and output should now be color managed and thus not as much an issue
as it used to be). This is *particularly* a problem on that silly OS that
doesn't support ColorSync (shame that particular initiative didn't come to
fruition). It would also take the problem of App "A" and "App" B having
slightly different output because App "A" supports a better CMM than App "B"
does.
Truthfully, I could see Adobe, Quark, et al. going away from app-level CMS
structures (or at least offering it as an alternative) if ColorSync would
support object-based rendering intents via an API that the software vendors
could plug into.
