The Mac OS has several processes running in the background that can
interfere with peripheral communications. Here are some of the things
you can turn off that may fix the problem:
1. Virtual memory must be turned off (this is the worst offender).
Memory control panel.
2. File Sharing must be turned off. File Sharing control panel.
3. Processor Cycling must not be allowed. Energy Saver control panel.
4. Spinning down the hard drive and dimming the screen must be set to
Never. Energy Saver control panel.
5. With OS 9, Index Volumes schedules must be turned off in Sherlock.
Find/Index Volumes menu option.
6. If the PowerBook is connected to a busy network, sometimes Appletalk
must be turned off. Chooser or Control Strip.
7. Appletalk Remote Access and any other network utility such as Dave
must be turned off.
8. Old versions of the Iomega driver sometimes interfere, get the latest driver.
9. For the worst cases, all of the above may not stop all interruptions.
Try disabling all extensions except the ones needed to actually run the
device. Extension Manager.
Good luck,
Robin Myers
