What causes the "zippering" effect on drum scanners?

It can be a timing error, so the data stream coming off the scanner gets out
of sync and the result is offset data in the file. A bad scsi controller or
disk drive can also do this.
Sometimes this can be fixed by simply going in to the guts of the scanner
and unplugging and replugging everything which has the effect of cleaning
all the contacts, power supply contacts in particular. This worked once for
me. Try a different disk, computer scsi cables etc as well.
Or you can lift the scanner over your head and send it plunging to a
concrete deck one story down. This produces a quite satisfying noise and
will tend to rejigger to scanner to good effect. The only reason I haven't
done this with a Colorgetter is it weighs 200 lbs. The Scanmate is a little
smaller and might be more readily susceptible to such a fix.
If sending the scanner down one flight doesn't do the trick try following it
with a computer, monitor etc.
