Eric,
I had the same problem on with an old Screen 747 (sherman tank) and it
drove me batty for days. Scans would sometimes come in partially
zippered; other times completely zippered, and sometimes not at all. It
was completely random. Anyway, after Screen replaced nearly every
major component in the scanner itself, I started working my way down
the chain. I replaced the scsi cable and the scsi interface card. Still
the "zippers."
As a last resort I attempted to optimize the scanner mac's tired old
scsi hard drive (the same one was used as a startup disk, and scratch
disk for both Photoshop and the scanner's software) when it just died.
I replaced the hard drive, and the zippers went away.
The Screen tech guy concluded that the scanner interface software was
having difficulty moving the data from the scanner's buffer to the hard
drive fast enough because the drive was so fragmented and the computer
was overworked trying to do everything on one drive. And he still
charged us for basically gutting the scanner. Hey, I was young and
stupid.
Ironically, the first time I noticed the zippers was on a scan for a
Filene's window display while I was working for a (now-defunct)
separator that handled some of your scanning before there was a Filenes
Imaging Department. ;-)

What causes the "zippering" effect on drum scanners? We have a ScanMate
11000 and can't seem to figure out what is causing it. Sometimes 2/3
of the
drum is affected and needs to be re-scanned! There seems to be no
correlation regarding where the pieces of film are on the drum which
makes
it all the more frustrating. Could it be a drum that is out of balance
or a
physical problem inside the scanner itself?
