Hi Sven,
What is the problem with the 2848 does it not do 8*10!? It supposed to be
the same quality as the 848! The 848 is great on negs!
I do negs on an Eversmart with Silverfast and the quality is ranging from
great (as good if not better than the 848)( I have had an 848) to very poor
in certain cases. I get very poor results when the negs are too dark
(overexposed) it's like scanning a transparency which has only got
information in the 3/4 range. I bet any ccd says no to that!
The glass is not usually a problem hence I do wet mounting when ever it's
possible though I'm in the process to make the scanner "glass-less". I don't
know how easy or difficult though to keep a 8*10 flat when there is not a
glass in front of it!? The depth of field is not massive ~1mm and that's ok
for smaller sized negs but 8*10?
I don't think you should have a problem with the glass but you either need
to keep the original above the glass slightly (as I said it's not easy in
case of an 8*10) or "wet-mount"! I would try that!
If the 2848 is affordable for you than everything is! No!?;)
Good luck!

Dear list
Maybe this is a bit of the lists topic,
but when you are among experts.....why not.
I'm trying to help a client to find a superior and affordable solution
to
scan 8x10" negatives, both b/w and color. We have tested
everything, from Imacon 2848 to several desktop-scanners
with transperency-units. But no devivice produce what we are going for.
I.e the same quality you get from a 4x5/5x7 Imacon-848 filmscan or
similar. A glassfree and flat scan.
Most of the desktopscanners gives us blurry and/or newtonringed scans.
Any suggestions??
