Camera profiling products are still in their infancy and are only about
halfway there so far from what I have seen. A primary issue with camera
profiling products is that they are basically giving (at best) relative
colorimetric style matching, from my testing experience. It would be like
having a printer profile with only colorimetric rendering intent and not
perceptual.
That is not to say camera profiling, even in its present state, isn't useful.
If you have a workflow that can benefit from colorimetric-style matching,
then a good camera profile can be a major time-saver. However, if your
workflow requires a preferred look (rendering), then current profiles will be
at best merely a starting point for getting your camera files to a
more-or-less known state. Then you will need to render your images in a good
editor (PS7) to get the look you want. Is it worth it? You need to judge for
yourself. It depends how different your preferred look is from
colorimetric-style profiles or the rendering designed into the cameras.
Evidently, for mine, Tom's, Andrew's and many others, our preferred
renderings (while likely different from each other) are quite different from
that which comes out of the camera directly or from colorimetric-style
profiles.
But be patient. With the new v4 profiles, it will be much easier to have
well-defined multiple renderings in camera profiles. The developers of future
camera profiling products likely will not only support multiple renderings,
but hopefully provide tools in their S/W that allows the user to customize
the rendering . This could be a simple as Tom's "anti-profiles" whose
rendering simulates film characteristics or more comprehensive to meet
individual preferences.
