Steven,
The linearization assistant in Best (or other RIP's) is not the only asset.
The Best RIP also provides an automatic color management workflow which
saves you from having to Assign and Convert using profiles manually to each
image in Photoshop. You could write Actions and possibly Create Droplets to
streamline a Photoshop workflow a bit but it still would not be as seamless
and as easy as it would be in Best (or any RIP w/CM). The Best RIP also
offers the production tools which enables you to create nestings, step and
repeat, tile, crop scale, and reprint duplicates quickly. One other major
advantage of any RIP is to take the tasks of color managing, ripping,
spooling, and printing to a dedicated server which enables you to get back
to work in Photoshop on the next image/job saving you a lot of time and
money. So I would definitely stick with the RIP's. There color accuracy and
workflow efficiency are very difficult to beat.
