Ray gave a very complete and informative discourse on dot gain (thanks
Ray!). I have a comment relating to the importance of the actual "status"
used for these measurements, though. If you look at the Murray-Davies
equation, you will see that it uses ratios of reflectance differences, which
makes the result less dependent upon the status of densitometry than you
might otherwise expect. Granted, standards are standards, so you should
abide by them as necessary, but you can get nearly identical results using
other types of measurements. This is discussed in more detail here
