I'm a little late to the issue but I have to put in my 2 cents worth on
one of my pet issues. The good part is that so many of you have already
given great explanations to many of the important elements of dot gain.
As previously stated the target dot gain number is usually for the
midtone dot. Hence if the Gracol spec states a specific target primary
for example cyan of 20%, then the target dot area for 50% is 70%. The
problem I have encounter is what are the calculations to determine all
the rest of the dots. Some of these typical values encountered where
stated in a previous post. There are two cases where I need the ideal
target values. 1st, when entering a target dot area for a RIP in an
offset press workflow. The Scitex RIPs I usually encounter require
these discrete values be entered. 2nd, when verifying proper
linearization for a large format or proofing inkjet printer. Our RIP
has a default setting of 20% gain at the midtone and doesn't need any
target values entered. It does come in very handy for linearization
verification. Over a year ago I encountered this issue and decided to
no longer estimate the values. The search began for a formula for
calculating all the points on a dot gain curve for the needed points
for a RIP and the 10, 20, or 40 step wedge points for inkjet RIPs. I
asked all of my favorite experts for a formula but could not find one.
My solution was to derive a curve. I then created an excel spreadsheet
with all the values needed for the Gracol standard. Later I created a
spreadsheet with the 10, 20, and 40 step wedges with a 20% gain which
is the same for all primaries for inkjet. These spreadsheets have
worked very well for me over the last year plus. I'm still amazed to
find no inquires about the need for these target values. I use these
spreadsheets on a regular basis.
