Just so that the original point is not lost in the thread: Don't use
EPS as transport format, use PDF as transport format.

Lack of precision in nomenclature is indeed undesirable.

I would not disagree with this opinion, but merely point out as before
that others hold a different opinion.
The bottom line is that in documentation words must be used. And for
workflows to flow, words must be used the same across applications.
For instance, when Acrobat reports a 'PostScript CSA profile', and
documentation describes to the Illustrator 10 user the rub with
generating PDF by printing CMYK mode documents to hotfolders for
Distiller to pick up, I don't see there is a problem.

Yes, fallback color spaces are offered. The second argument is subject
to differences of opinion. As long as the documentation states what the
implementation does, there is no confusion (although stating what the
implementation does may itself confuse as no-one has the time for the
multiplicity of processing workflows in PostScript, EPS and PDF.)
>A RIP can't simply ignore them
The traditional philosophy of CIEBased workflows is that the RIP
honours incoming CIEBased spaces unquestioningly, so to speak. This
leads to not putting an interface on CIEBased spaces in general. Where
does one stop adding buttons? That again is a matter of opinion with no
unequivocal answer. IMO the user is best advised to harmonize the color
spaces in the document from the outset, as documentation often advises.
Cheers,
Henrik
