Proprietary systems like the Artisan are great, but they have a built-in cost
premium. The same Sony tube with a nonproprietary calibration system is a lot
less money. Probably the most affordable top-end CRT at the moment is the
LaCie Blue 19 inch CRT monitor. Under $400US, with very good color and
consistancy. I popped a Spyder on one at Imaging USA last week, precalibrated the white
point and profiled it, and found the curve corrections required to balance the
channels to be minimal, and very smooth.
