I'm getting a very heavy posterization in the flesh colors of all the
images of people I'm printing at Epson 1270, 720 dpi, with a custom
profile for the ink/paper combination I'm using. The tonal transitions
in other colors than flesh seems smooth, with almost no banding. Have
somebody seen this? Could this be related to some in the profile
itself?
Is it a very fine bit of banding where you get a slight green cast on
one side of the band and an abrupt magenta cast on the other? If so,
yes I've seen this.
It's possible that a profile can exacerbate pre-existing posterization
due to exceptional non-linear tone response. I'd had much better luck
using PhotoEnhance4 mode with the older drivers, and Color
Controls>PhotoRealistic with newer drivers. The catch is that while you
get much more linear tone response, there is a smaller gamut. For
photos, I think this is less of a problem than the posterization. The
other catch is that you'll need a custom profile, or futz with the
output until you get used to the new behavior of the printer. If I
recall correctly, this is easiest if the editing space is ColorMatch
RGB if you're on a Macintosh since the Mac driver is expecting a gamma
of 1.8 for the source image.
Anyway, the only other thing I can suggest would be to use something
other than the native 1270 driver. If you're using Mac OS X, then you
might see if the 4.2.6-pre1 version of gimp-print drivers will do a
better job in this regard.
