Subject: Nikon 8000 ED quality, compatibility OSX

Hello all,
I am thinking of buying a Nikon 8000 ED Scanner and would like feedback
on its quality and its compatibility with OSX 1.2.6? For the money, it
seems the only real option in the field but having tried to use an
Epson Expression 1600 (Silverfast IT8 driver) to scan slides and
negatives, I have come to the conclusion that I need a dedicated film
scanner if I can get scans of a resolution that will produce high
resolution files. I also need a 120/220 format capability. I need
resolutions that will produce legitimate 150 MB files from 35 mm and
higher for 120 film for prints up to 48"? Any hope that this might do
the trick? Or whistling in the wind?

Using the 8000 ED has been successful for my lab. I do use the
software by Nikon, version 3.1.4. I have tried the trial version
of Silverfast and in my humble opinion as good as it is, it is written
for too many different scanners (like VueScan).
I scan both medium format and 35 mm. When I do what I personally call
an archival scan I use 16 passes, single row of CCD's, and 48 bit.
Files are large, and this is time consuming. However the results are
outstanding and a cost a fraction of the Imacon, or a drum scanner.
The digital technicians in my lab using the Nikon software do most of
the color balancing/editing in the Nikon software, leaving PS 7 for
other uses.
In my town there are other scanning professionals that have Nikon
scanners as well as drum scanners. My understanding is these
professionals can tell the difference between finished work that has
been scanned on their drum scanner and the Nikon scanner. But can
their client see this difference in the clients finished product.
Would I buy the 8000 ED again? You bet! I also use the Nikon 4000
ED.
Cheers
