I have come to the conclusion that I need a dedicated film
scanner if I can get scans of a resolution that will produce high
resolution files. I also need a 120/220 format capability. I need
resolutions that will produce legitimate 150 MB files from 35 mm and
higher for 120 film for prints up to 48"? Any hope that this might do
the trick? Or whistling in the wind?
Dear Michael
Resolution is only a part of the story if you really do want high
resolution image files. The best image files from scanned film come
from a drum scanner in peak condition outputting the whole gamut it can
see. It will ideally be profiled and driven by a skilled operator with
the time and inclination to get the last drop from the film. There are
many reasons why the above produces better results than a CCD scanner
but perhaps I should not go into that here.
You could buy these scans in or settle for a lower quality in-house
route which may well be adequate for your present needs. If this is the
case then the Imacon range of scanners are capable of good results if
you get a nice one.
It's worth bearing in mind that any good scanner is expensive and it
takes time to get the best results out of them. In doing the maths you
may well find it cheaper to buy in top quality scans and use the time,
capital, depreciation and learning investment saved to better advantage!
Cheers
Richard
