Don,
I'm curious if you used the glass carrier. The Nikons are notorious for
shallow DOF, but otherwise get high marks for resolution from most users.
Ernst Dinkla has modded one of the carriers to fluid mount and published
details on the web for others. Another problem is Nikonscan software for
color negs clips highlight detail slightly, and no apparent workaround than
another driver such as Silverfast and/or Vuescan. Nikonscan seems to
correct color neg tone/color to the approximate dynamics of chromes, a
problem for folks who shoot them for the longer scale.
There are a few other issues that can be seen on the Yahoo Coolscan 8000
group list archives.
