Thanks to all who responded both on and off list.
Those who recommended loading only the upgrade CD were correct - when the
PS 7 installer can not find
an older version a window appears and asks to browse to the older version
or to enter a valid serial number.
Apparently QuarkXPress 6 functions in a similar way - but also requires you
to register within four days
or the software ceases to function.
