That sounds like a lot of marketing speak. They imply that there is no

That's true. There are other solutions which can do a hardware
calibration "by hand". For example the Quato Silverhaze calibration
allows this. Notice that I'm related to Quato. But nonetheless this
information is interesting for you I think. The calibrator measures the
display and with the OSD the user will adjust the gamma (if available),
RGB (whitepoint), contrast (for non-digital displays), brightness, CMY
(if that's offered). The software shows an indicator for each value how
far off you're from the optimum value and this is updated all the time so
you can watch how your adjustments affect the results. So the calibration
is done in the hardware as complete as possible. Only very minor
corrections are then needed to be done via the LUT. That's the same as
the basICColor solution which also needs to do some minor corrections via
the LUT. You can take a look at the curves which are loaded to the LUT.
If the curves in RGB are far away from the other and if the curves are
far of a slope of 1 then the adjustments are "heavy" and done only or
more then neccessary in the LUT.
When comparing different solutions be aware that the final profiles will
slightly affect the colorspace and much more how that available space is
used, how fine the calibration tunes the colors to achieve a good match
to the desired color (XYZ) and how the gamma/whitepoint is for different
shades of grey.
Unfortunatelly the Silverhaze solution is right now not available in the
states.

Peter
