Dupont USED to OEM the Best RIP. They now have the new CromaProXP. I just
got back from a morning-long seminar on the system. The system is more of a
"closed loop color matching system" designed to match a press sheet on an
ink jet proofing system. It is indeed an Adobe PS3 RIP, with quite a bit of
color "matching" software. They have not embraced the ICC standard as they
feel it is not as accurate when trying to match what's on press. They do
create and edit profiles in the system, but they are "CromaPro" profiles.
This is very heavily oriented toward press match proofing on Epson or HP
printers. It has great workflow options including compatibility with a Delta
List via a 3rd party piece of software. There is also a subset of the larger
press target that you can output on your proofer and read in, but they call
that a "calibration" routine rather than a profile creation. They claim all
you have to do is pop one of these strips out every Monday and read it in to
set up for the week... I'll believe that when I see it. But I guess you can
run it more often if need be. They can export and import ICC profiles, but
as I said earlier, it seems to be strictly focused on the print industry and
their need to match to a press. It seemed from my perspective, to be one of
the "best" solutions (pardon the pun) I have seen yet. It also handles spot
colors very very well and has the ability to tweak the profiles it generates
in three different ways.
The only thing I don't like is the inability to create your own custom paper
profiles. The ability is in the software because you can match a press sheet
using their targets (set up in strip reading format, nice) but the ink
limits (max density etc) are not adjustable. You have to choose one of their
base profiles for the paper profile of the proofer. It seems that they want
you to use only the papers they have created targets for (I was told both
Epson and Dupont papers are supported). I've encountered this before in the
graphic arts industry and I can't be sure if it's a desire to control the
process or a desire to lock you into their consumables.
As long as it fits into your workflow, and it has a lot of workflow options
it's worth taking a look at. If I were running a print shop, color trade
shop, screen printer or packaging business, I'd take a long look at it. For
RGB printing, matching to an digital original, I don't think it would be a
viable workflow. Try the Fuji Pictrograph for Digital camera proofs and
profile the digital camera as well. Pitman seems to be the only distributor.

Thanks for the input, Roger. Three questions/concerns:
