In Panther you can print with Epson drivers , Gimp or a combined PDF
workflow , yet as Andrew was saying the number of profiles for specific
devices will be limited. OsX rip's are plenty , also plenty expensive for an
old printer. For example Image print rgb is already at $500US. The value
added by the new rip's can be applied to your next purchases of printers but
the limited gamut of the 1270 won't justify such an expense. Since you have
the same problem in the driver as the rip it's a printer problem. Yes
profiles do ink limit in a sense but color fringing is something I've never
seen even with my worst profile!
I've seen banding on these printers before and color fringing. Most can be
corrected with some serious cleaning and alignment. You'll need to clean the
heads with Windex and paper towel even let the heads soak overnight with the
heads parked over the soaked paper towel. Alignment is in the tools area of
the driver. When the heads are at the end of life they will start banding as
certain cells are either plugged or electronically broken.
