You don't have to set the display in the color settings and risk harm
elsewhere. Just use the RGB Soft proof and pick Monitor RGB and you'll see
what the file looks like to those other applications.

I'd use the display profile to tag a file scanned from color neg as well so
it's not a concept that's wrong. It works in some cases. I'd still not have
the display profile actually loaded in the color settings (or recommend it).
