We're at a point now that most hardware, particularly Quartz Extreme

We can now consider matching untagged data by default. The question
remaining would be whether to assume Generic RGB or sRGB as the source
for all untagged RGB data, and/or to have Quartz look to the ColorSync
prefs for this info. I'm interested in this part of the discussion.
sRGB. Stamp out mystery meat. Stamp out randomly behaving RGB images.
Let's see untagged RGB images looking reasonably the same no matter
what Macintosh they're displayed on, or what technology does the
displaying.
The more I think about it, the more I convince myself a system wide
"working space" is asking for trouble with untagged data. It encourages
untagged data, that will likely be shared, looking different depending
on where it is.
Untagged=sRGB.
If people don't like it, they should tag with something explicit. It
would also encourage application developers, if sRGB is perceived to be
limiting, to have an "assign profile" option in their application.
Choice should come through embedding, not through making assumptions.
My vote is to get rid of the RGB Default pop-up menu, and hardwire sRGB
as the assumed source for untagged objects. CMYK Default and Gray
Default should be based on ColorSync Preferences pop-up menus and until
that happens, the perverse phrase that's in there now that says these
settings are being used should be removed ASAP.
