Think about how untagged RGB images on the *same* computer would be
handled in a multi-user environment where each user could set a
separate profile to be assumed as source. It just wreaks of disaster in
the waiting. When upgrading the system and these preferences are lost,
boom - images would suddenly look different also. Sophisticated users
who need to work with spaces other than sRGB can do so through explicit
tagging & embedding (of course the behavior of the major applications,
and what they can assume, remains up to the settings in their
respective applications).
