prefs for this info. I'm interested in this part of the discussion.
Since what we're talking about are UNTAGGED rgb image files sRGB really is
the only default to look to. Most of the devices out there format to an
approximation of this type of color space and character, all web images
other than the very few who would dare use something else, display devices
showing these images and devices printing these same images will all turn
around sRGB. On multiple monitor set ups one would want the data to remain
constant on these images, so again sRGB would be the obvious choice.
With the goal of using the monitor as the portal into the visual world we
work in , calibration of the devices using a base of sRGB as the lowest
common denominator point towards sRGB as that defacto standard.
Even though these same devices (exception monitors) have evolved much past
the limitations of a restrained sRGB space this "consumer" level notion of
color will remain the default standard for a long time to come.
Any color managed workflow documents still retain their Colorsync advantages
yet assure a consistent platform and cross platform consistency for the
largely assumed digital hub "color space" assumed by most devices out there.
The only other glaring assumption that would have be our greatest wish>
System gamma at 2.2 but that's another story..........
