Can I point out again we're talking about untagged image data? I'm
not convinced that assuming sRGB for untagged image data is
significantly more reliably accurate than assuming the display

it came from no matter what you assume.
It seems pretty self evident to me that it's better to guess ONE
THING, even if it's not always correct, than for the guess to be a
RANDOM THING which increases the odds that it's not correct
astronomically.
Not to beat a dead hores, but if I may quote from Apple's ColorSync
page:
ColorSync and Mac OS X deliver on the promise of higher productivity
through the accurate representation and consistent reproduction of
color.

I think we all agree that with untagged data, we can toss accurate
representation out the window. But by assuming Monitor RGB we
needlessly toss out consistent reproduction too. Safari has no excuse
to assume anything other than sRGB for untagged data. System wide,
what to assume is more open for debate.
Somewhat tangential, but the same page also says that (in Panther)
"QuickTime-aware" applications use embedded color profiles by default.
Is QuickTime Player not a "QuickTime-aware" application because it
doesn't seem to be paying any attention to embedded profiles in the few
tiff images I've tossed at it.
