I'm in the middle of co-writing a white paper and a book on how
ColorSync is integrated into Mac OS X v10.3 "Panther".
Good to hear! It seems that's sorely needed ...
4) In Panther, we have supplied a new Print Dialog Extension (PDE),
called "ColorSync". This PDE is accessed by clicking on the pop-up
labeled "Copies & Pages" near the center of the Print dialog, and
scrolling down to "ColorSync". Find this now, it's your new best
friend.
Well, it probably would be if
a) it were clearer what the settings mean - this problem is solved (for
the people on this list) by your post. However, Mac OS X Help for this
matter is very much lacking.
b) the ColorSync PDE wasn't in conflict with vendor specific PDEs.
In my case, I use a HP Color LaserJet 5500. The driver for this printer
is included in Panther, but I guess it's actually written by HP. This
driver includes an additional "Color Options" PDE that results in both
"ColorSync" and "Color Options" options in the Print dialog, which is
confusing to begin with. But more importantly, "Color Options" seems to
kind of overwrite "ColorSync". If you choose
Color Options > Advanced Options > Advanced > RGB Color = Device
then - no matter what the settings in the "ColorSync" PDE are! - the
result is always similar to choosing "In Printer" in "ColorSync".
"Similar", since there is one and only one difference in the resulting
PostScript:
-------------------------------------------------
"ColorSync" > "In Printer":
-------------------------------------------------
%ūginFeature: *HPRGBEmulation sRGB
globaldict /ColorSmartColorMatching known {
MatchScreen ColorSmartTextAdjustment
MatchScreen ColorSmartGraphicsAdjustment
MatchScreen ColorSmartImageAdjustment
} if
%%EndFeature
-------------------------------------------------
"Color Options" > "RGB Color = Device":
-------------------------------------------------
%ūginFeature: *HPRGBEmulation Device
globaldict /ColorSmartColorMatching known {
Vivid ColorSmartTextAdjustment
Vivid ColorSmartGraphicsAdjustment
Vivid ColorSmartImageAdjustment
} if
%%EndFeature
-------------------------------------------------
Again, as soon as "Color Options" > "RGB Color = Device" is chosen, the
setting in "ColorSync" doesn't matter.
This is all very confusing as to what setting should be chosen when.
In Panther, when printing to PostScript devices, you have a
choice of using PostScript color management (called "In Printer"), or
host-based color matching using ColorSync (called "Standard"). "In
Printer" acts the same as earlier releases. "Standard" uses ColorSync
to convert from the source color in your documents to a single output
profile, and sends pre-matched device data to the printer/RIP.
- So, is it correct that choosing "Standard" means that the color
profile chosen in ColorSync Utility > Devices > Printer >
<specific_printer> is applied when generating the output for that
spcific printer?
In other words, should changing this color profile in ColorSync Utility
have an effect on the resulting print, as long as "Standard" is chosen?
I ask because with the HP Color LaserJet 5500, changing the profile has
no effect whatsoever. If it should have an effect, is this a bug on
Apple's or HP's side? (Of course, HP's support blames Apple and vice
versa.)
- And do I get it right that according to what you say HP's support is
definitely wrong when it tells me that calibrating a printer in Mac OS
X is done by selecting a respective printer profile in ColorSync
Utility > Preferences?
I'd be glad if you could confirm or correct these points, because right
now, after contacting HP and Apple support, I'm really confused and
don't know where to begin with my trial to calibrate my Color LaserJet
5500.
Bye
