At least in 10.2, the core graphics PDF to raster RIP was RGB only. I'm
not sure if this has changed under 10.3.
Thank you Chris, finally an answer.
There is (or was), however, an easily found user setting in Gimp-Print
called RawCMYK. It has never worked.
I've tried profiling over Raw CMYK and that did not produce good results
either as an RGB device or CMYK device.
No, 100% GCR, k all the way up the scale. CMY did not remain pure either
if I recall. So "raw" CMYK was converted to GenericRGB first, with some
strange conversion to CMYK farther down the pipeline. If you printed to
a file using that setting, you would find it was no longer CMYK, but
RGB, and tagged GenericRGB.
Perhaps this setting has been excluded from the Panther drivers.
The Gimp-Print drivers in 10.3 are version 4.2.5. They also have Raw
CMYK as an option.
I'm wondering now, given your previous post about passing CMYK in
Panther, if a (any) CMYK was tagged GenericCMYK it might pass through.
Seems things under the hood are looking for, or converting to, those
generic system profiles. They are a bit hidden I might add.
