You have choice. If camera vendors or application vendors are do not
have the functionality you require, then get a new application.
Photoshop allows us to assign appropriate profiles to images, so maybe
Photoshop is a better tool for what you need.
The non-savvy user is not one who is going to have the sophistication
to be going off and changing a would-be OS-level setting that affects
overall behavior of untagged RGB images on the entire system. That's
asking for big trouble. You're asking for a feature for a prosumer or
professional who is apparently unwilling to use Photoshop. If they're
not going to use Photoshop and get it working correctly I hardly think
having this user change a system level setting that affects *all*
untagged images is a good thing. It sounds like a bad thing.
We need to have a fallback position that can take what they (don't)
give us, make the the best sense of it, and provide users with the
most likely correct option in the face of not really knowing.
A system level setting that affects all untagged images is not a
fallback position. It does not solve the problem. It's a hack. Hacks
have a tendency to cause more problems especially in the hands of users
who don't really understand this stuff.
