The question is, Should ToCIE and ToUnicode (and other character encoding) work the same in the OS? One can manually select a character encoding, if for some reason the Safari or Mail display is meaningless. But even if Safari provided the option to assign a color space, there is no reason to think it would improve the user experience IMHO.

With character encoding the ability to manually assign an alternative is meaningful, because the level of expertise involved in interpreting a written paragraph is in a sense higher than the level of expertise involved in interpreting an image (and especially in HTML environments where anything goes anyway).

Thanks,
Henrik
