True, the generic profiles are necessary and have been there since
ColorSync 1.0.

True, if two workstations set up different default profiles they will
not render the same untagged data in the same way.
Maybe the confusion arises because the color managed community has come
to expect that color spaces represent known synthetic or physical
device parameters.
The term 'generic' is not ideal, but 'default' indicates a color space
which is specifically recommended and not a color space which is a
statistical guesstimate.

preferences altogether.
True.
When the fixed character generator of the Apple II was replaced by the
softfont drawn by the Mac on the ImageWriter and LaserWriter, the
general idea was that everyone would turn her or his handwriting into a
personal softfont.
This level of skill never happened.
When the density-based paired transform of CEPS workflows was replaced
by the industry standard reference color space and the freely paired
device profile conversion, the general idea was that every monitor,
printer and press state would be user configured for color management.
This level of skill never happened, either.
Best solidify the entry level environment where the device profile
model essentially does not apply, and give the color managed
environment less to worry about. It can't conceivably be the job of the
OS to try to cope with the endless complexities of untagged data.
The only request is to submit the generic color spaces to ongoing
assessment. This to avoid a gap between what the generic profiles
assume to be representative and how technological development changes
the character of what is representative over time.
Thanks,
Henrik
