Everyday I see users of large format printers (specially solvent ones) run
away from ICC profiles for this very reason.
The thing is, for some applications perfectly accurate color is less
important than punchy solids. So they tend to prefer ink curves that don't
contaminate primary colors and don't pull back solids, even if that means
struggling to achieve gray balance and correct gamma.
I would say the solution could be for more large format RIPs to support ICC
link profiles. Then, using a tool such as link-o-lator, you could do a link
profile that maps pure colors correctly while at the same time achieving
correct balance and appearance.
As the support for link profiles is so scarce throughout the industry, it
would be even better if someone releases an "unlinked linker" that optimizes
a pair of profiles (source, destination) so that their combined effect is
the same as a link profile made with such choices as primary color mapping
and pure black preservation. That way you would be able to use that pair of
profiles in any ICC-compliant RIP and achieve what's needed for that market.

You appear to be relating the ink cart colors to document-space colors. Its
