Subject: Eye-One Diagnostics

Anyone take this seriously? When I first got it I would occasionally run
it, and all was well. Now, my device fails the Reflectance spot
measurement test, even though it appears to be functioning.
Interestingly, it also initially fails dark calibration in ErgoSoft's
StudioPrint which interacts with it directly.
GretagMacbeth Application Support tells me, that, well, you know,
sometimes it's ok when Diagnostics says it isn't. So make some profiles
and if they seem fine then the instrument is probably fine.
Yikes, I've never made a profile that was "fine", I've only made
profiles I can learn to live with or not. They are never fine. I've
taken Bruce Fraser's advice and lowered my expectations. A lot.
But the one thing I need to count on, if nothing else, is that at least
this expensive device is accurate. If I'm not even sure of that then
it's all smoke and mirrors. Probably fine just doesn't sit well.
So, should I feel "fine" with my device failing the diagnostic software
that came with it? Anyone have experience with this or know more about it?
Thanks,
Tyler, ranting again

I exchanged a perfectly good i1 pro head / spectrophotometer because it was in warrantee and would not pass the test. The exchange was promoted by the tech support telephone people (GIA)

When I received the new one, it also failed. I tried the test on the Mac G3 PowerBook LCD, and it passed. Since I had not shipped the original one back, I tried it also on the PowerBook LCD, and low and behold, it passed.

Then I went back to the CRT, a Mitsi Diamond Pro 2060u driven by the G3 PowerBook, and upped the brightness or contrast. Don't remember which one it has been so long ago. Now, both units passed all tests.

It really would have been nice if someone in telephone tech support would have known about this and informed me. I did return the original i1 Pro head.

I don't know if this is the same problem you are having, but hope my experience will help others.

Cheers
