You are only viewing a projection of the color. What are the L* values ?
There is only a problem if the L*a*b* values fold back, meaning that
there is more than one device value that can produce a given L*a*b*.

The thing of primary concern is that there be a 1:1 mapping between
the PCS and the device values, and that there be continuity in
this mapping. A thing of secondary concern is how greatly the
relationship between device values and PCS changes (ie. degree
of non proportionality), which will affect how accurately the devices
behaviour can be modeled.
