Characterization generally takes effort (ie. lots of test patches
to read, lots of number crunching to do), whereas per device channel
calibration is quick (test wedge per channel, the maths takes
milliseconds).
Combined appropriately, the result is a system with good
colorimetric accuracy, and a practical means of compensating
for minor day to day device behaviour changes.
Yes, non-monotonic behaviour at gamut extremes can cause problems during
both characterization and calibration. Well designed systems generally
cope with this by stopping short of the non-monotonic regions.
Note that a device that displays non-monotonicity in an essential color
region is fundamentally unsuited for use as a color reproduction device.>
Yes, but the fact that many people (evidence from this list as well as my
own experience) implies that something is failing somewhere. A well
designed system would be as you mention - for the manufacturer to do the
colorimetric characterization and then a simple density measurement (or
colorimetric) would put the system into a workable state - but that is not
usually the case. If it were, then we would not all be seeing strange
behavior and not need to be doing our own testing and "tricks". Those
involved in the photo finishing markets don't seem to suffer so much from
these anomolies - the results obtained from the simple calibration features
in the Lambda, Lightjet, etc. would imply that these systems have done
something along the lines of what you mention above. For my part, I will
continue to cry and moan in the hopes that someone someday will hear and
deliver a well-balanced solution with all of the RDA.
