Monitor calibration software such as OptiCAL is designed to assist in putting
monitors in an optimal hardware state before defining that state with an ICC
profile... LCDs by and large are not tweaked in this manner, so those who
love to tinker under the hood aren't so excited about them.

Whoa! You are talking ancient history here... I've been removing copies of
the Knoll panel for many years, but I seldom see it anymore.

Their is some confusion on the topic, and there are certainly minor
differences between some versions out there, not to mention printer-type
profiles based on sRGB that can really cause some confusion... but generally
its all all intended to be the same flavor.
