Hi Eric,
I usually apply a slight ink limit (320-380%) to achieve a better gray
balance in the profile. With Profilemaker 4.1, I use the "Balance" feature
and adjust the total ink limit until none of the CMY inks reach 100%. I like
to see between 90-95% as the limit in any single ink. This also gives you
some insight on well you set the per channel limits in the RIP. If the CMY
limits vary more than about 10-15% from each other, I'd be heading back into
my RIP linearization and trying different ink limits.
Leaving the profile at 400% "forces" all the inks to 100% making it more
difficult to achieve gray balance. Of course, PM 4.1 rarely pays any
attention to what you specify as a total ink limit and tends to do what it
wants anyway!.
