I was wondering if there is a consensus on the current state
of LCDs
compared to CRTs? Are they better for doing color critical
work? I
have only used CRTs for color critical work so I don't have
any direct
experience with the LCDs. I have made a list of pros and
cons for LCD
displays. There are a lot of pros but the two cons are the
reasons that
have kept me from switching to an LCD. Is viewing angle
still an issue
for the new high end LCDs?
Pros for LCDs:
1. Brighter display (200+ cd/m2)
#Even up to 300 cd
2. Better contrast
#Yes, in ratio, but some of the LCDs have a tendency to block
shadow-detail.
# But much sharper.
3. Less eye strain
4. Remains calibrated much longer
#Maybe for the few that can be correct calibrated !!
5. Lasts much longer than a CRT
#No, but not aging the same
6. Takes up less space on desk
7. Consumes less power
8. No warm-up period
#Yes, but much shorter than the CRT
Cons for LCDs:
1. Expensive
#Not compared to high-end CRTs, also remember that the LCD gives you
around two inches more of display.
(i.e LCD 20" is CRT 22") And the Apple Cinema line has dropped quite a
bit in price.
2. Viewing angle issues
#Very much improved, but a bigger problem is the colorshifts, usually
blue from one side and red from the other.
Eizo has solved that very much with their "Super IPS DualDomain"
technique which, in short, are LC-cells in two different
directions.
