Let me clarify. If you're using a recent version of PhotoShop, you
can always do your conversion to a custom printer profile inside
PhotoShop prior to printing, and then just choose "none" for color
correction in the Epson driver options (assuming that choice is still
available under OS-X). This used to give similar but not identical
results to picking the custom printer profile in the driver under
OS-9. It's a way to apply custom profiles even if the driver doesn't
recognize them, but it's much more awkward especially for newcomers.
By the way:
1) I don't know why there was a (slight) difference in prints under
OS-9 depending on which method you used to apply the custom profiles.
I think people are currently better off using application-level color
management and turning off color management in the printer driver. You
don't get rendering intent control on OS X (yet), and you won't have
the option of black point compensation either, in comparison to
Photoshop. Both of these are important options to have. The following
two options would get you the "same" results (differences between
Adobe ACE and Apple CMM notwithstanding):
Photoshop does color management:
Print Space (in Photoshop's Print w/ Preview) set to custom profile
for the printer
Rendering intent set to the profile's default (you'd need to know
this, it's probably perceptual)
Black point compensation OFF
Driver color management set to off (or for a custom profile whatever
settings were used to build the profile)
OR
Printer driver (OS) does color management:
Print Space set to Printer Color Management (which is not an option
in Photoshop 7 in OS X for some reason): this is necessary or the
source space is not forwarded onto the driver/OS
Driver color management set to ColorSync
Ensure ColorSync Utility>Device>your printer>your printer
media>Custom profile is set to custom profile if necessary
2) Some people on this list said it was better to choose "automatic"
or even "photo-enhance" rather than "none" in the Epson driver when
using custom profiles, but there was some question about gamut sizes
being the same or not using these different options -- I don't know
what the final consensus was on this point.
From my own experience only, I've had bad luck using Automatic in Epson
printer drivers. The behavior of the printer changes depending on
what's being printed, so that's a no go. Color controls>Photo-realistic
(OS X default) is much more well behaved and "linear" but with reduced
gamut. I've made nice profiles with the printer in this condition.
PhotoEnhance4 is currently not available on OS X drivers (not sure if
it will be at some point or what), but got good results with it on OS
9. No Color Adjustment has a larger gamut, but considerably less
friendly behavior.
Considering how important Epson printers are to Mac users doing
digital photography, I am dismayed by these ongoing issues with OS-X.
Yeah, don't get me started. In the meantime, you might consider:
