Jim:
Inkjet printing is not perfect. When comparing an inkjet output to
traditional C print there will be some differences. Kind of like why a C
print never MATCHES an Ektachrome or why a Fuji print and a Kodak print are
some what different.
That said you also my have just gotten a bad demo (jezz I hope it wasn't
us!). A couple things pop out at me. Why didn't this dealer have a
calibrated display? That's pretty cheap these days for someone really
interested in quality output and a dealer to boot.
Did he try and print without the RIP? did he have accurate profiles for the
printer? Was the RIP even set up properly? A lot of unanswered questions
here.
I suggest you start over with another dealer. Even if you have to travel
someplace at least you would know if the problems you see are the dealers
ability or the equipment. Ask you potential new dealer if they also sell
color management solutions and whose. Someone who sells Gretag, Monaco,
X-Rite etc is serious about color and getting the best output. Is the
monitor calibrated? What kind of market does the Epson dealer typically sell
to? i.e. a dealer who works in fine art and with professional photographers
is probably a bit more serious about color than a signage guy. Go with your
gut.
Good Luck,
John Massman
