HI,
I know that without seeing the print in question you can't be sure of an
answer but I need an idea of what might have gone wrong.
I went for a demo the other day of a 7600 and a RIP for it. Not having a
profiler yet (on the list of things I need), I used Apple's standard
Cinema profile. Brought a file of a fall scene (shot on Ektachrome 200)
which looked good on my monitor (proper color, detail and saturation)
and looked about the same on his monitor (his wasn't a Cinema display
and said his hadn't been profiled yet). I have spent many years making
color prints in a darkroom so I am able to see color shifts and the
like. The resulting print (ultrachrome on premium luster) looks good for
color balance (no apparent shifts in highlights, shadows or grays). The
highlight and shadow detail is there and very close to the original.
However, the print looks dull. The yellows, reds and oranges lack
saturation. Greens lack some seperation compared to the original. The
photo was taken in the late afternoon and there was a tree with no bark
on it and fencing in the field which both "sparkled" and that "sparkle"
is not in the print either. Delicate fall colors in the distance which
were mixed in with green foliage and visible in the original are now
barely visible and lifeless. The sky and water have a purple look. If I
was making this print in the darkroom I would say that it is overexposed
as far as the color and saturation goes (but shadow detail is correct
which contradicts that).
So with this description in mind, might it be:
1. My file
2. Printer problem
3. RIP problem
4. Need to really oversaturate color for this printer/ink/paper combo
5 Other...
I am concerned and looking for answers since I plan on purchasing the
printer, RIP, profiling solution, scanner and I want to know that my
choices are correct for that kind of $$.
Thanks for anything you can offer!
Jim
